How is cataract treated?
The only effective method for treating cataracts is surgery.
This is one of the most common and safest procedures in eye care , which is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia in 15-30 minutes.
After the original lens is broken up using ultrasound or a femtosecond laser, the lens remnants are removed and a new artificial intraocular lens is implanted in its original place.
This procedure is minimally invasive and healing is very fast , as early as the second day after surgery.
What causes cataracts?
Cataracts most often appear after the age of 60 and affect more than 70% of the population . They can affect one or both eyes.
The exact cause of cataracts has not yet been discovered. Cataracts are closely related to aging and changes in the structure of the lens .
As a result of chemical changes inside the lens, light transmission through the lens is limited and visual acuity decreases, especially at a distance.
Symptoms of cataracts
Cataracts develop slowly, so changes are minimally noticeable at first.
If the lens becomes more cloudy, visual acuity decreases, especially at a distance. Reading distant text can be difficult even with glasses. Vision becomes blurry and contrast vision is lost. Color perception in each eye may also change.

What to consider when choosing lenses
Choosing the right type of intraocular lens is an important step that can significantly and long-term affect the quality of vision and life after the procedure. Thanks to modern technologies, we have a very wide range of lenses available today.
First, consider your daily needs:
Do you want to read without glasses, do you often drive at night, or do you mind wearing glasses at a certain distance?
Are you active in sports, do you often work with a computer, or do you work with fine motor skills?
Do you want to see smoothly at all distances (near, middle and far) without glasses?
All of this can be solved today by choosing the right lens. Another important aspect is the physical and material properties of the lens. Do you prefer that the new lens be as similar as possible to your original, natural lens? Our experienced doctors will help you choose the most suitable option for you and your needs.
Before the procedure
Before the procedure itself, we will first schedule a non-binding consultation. During this appointment, we will assess the suitability of the procedure, explain the surgical procedure and postoperative care to you. The doctor will also warn you about possible complications.
- We will check your visual acuity. We will find out how well you can see at a distance and up close.
- We will examine your eye lens and retina. Using special instruments, we will assess the degree of lens clouding and the overall condition of the eye.
- We will measure eye pressure to rule out other eye diseases.
- We will perform eye biometry, i.e. precise eye measurements for the selection and planning of a new intraocular lens implantation.
Together with the doctor, you will agree on the date of the surgery.
During the procedure
The entire procedure takes approximately 15-30 minutes. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is painless. We use anesthetic drops to numb the eye. You will be conscious the entire time during the procedure and can communicate normally with the doctor and staff.
We remove the cloudy lens using an ultrasound method and insert a new intraocular lens into the eye, which will replace the function of the original lens.
After the procedure
You can go home immediately after the procedure. However, we recommend having someone with you. Healing is very fast and you will see better within a few hours after the procedure. Full stabilization of vision occurs within a few weeks.
We recommend maintaining a rest regimen, avoiding physical exertion and following the prescribed eye drops. You will come to the doctor for a check-up during the first month after the operation. We will schedule regular eye examinations in the future. You can contact us at any time.
